Limbo and Hilo Strategy: Targets, Cards and 100% RTP

Limbo and Hilo are the two newest games in the Duel Originals lobby, and both carry the same 100% RTP tag as Dice, Crash and Mines. That changes what strategy even means.

At a normal casino, strategy in these games is mostly about losing slower. At Duel the expected value is the same whatever you pick, so the only real question is how much swing you want and how long you want your balance to last. This guide gives you the numbers to make that call in each game, plus the mistakes that quietly blow up sessions.

Limbo in 20 seconds

You set a bet and a target multiplier. The game draws a result. If it lands at or above your target, you get paid your bet times that target. If it lands below, you lose the bet. That's the whole game.

The live rules and limits are on our Limbo game page.

There's no waiting for a curve to climb and no button to panic click. You make one decision before the round starts. Think of it as Crash with the cash out locked in ahead of time, or Dice where you choose a payout instead of a roll over number. Duel also gives you a Manual and an Auto tab, so you can run the same bet over and over without clicking.

The only Limbo decision: your target

At 100% RTP the fair win chance is 100 divided by your target. Here's what that looks like:

2x wins 50% of the time

3x wins 33.33%

5x wins 20%

10x wins 10%

25x wins 4%

100x wins 1%

1000x wins 0.1%

Multiply any target by its chance and you get exactly 1. Every row is the same bet in disguise. A 1.1x target isn't the "safe" play and 100x isn't the "degen" play. They're the same expected value with very different rides.

One honest note. Open Limbo and you'll see 49.95% next to the default 2.00x, not a clean 50%. That's the base number the screen shows, and the Zero Edge badge sits right under it. Duel runs Originals at 100% RTP on wagers up to $50,000 per 24 hours, and the limit resets daily.

What each target feels like

The table above tells you the odds of one round. What actually decides your night is streaks. These are the ones worth knowing before you pick a target:

  • 1.1x: you win about 91% of rounds, but over 10 rounds you'll lose at least once about 61% of the time. Each loss wipes out roughly ten wins.
  • 2x: five losses in a row happens about 3% of the time. Play long enough and you will see it.
  • 10x: going 20 rounds without a single hit happens about 12% of the time.
  • 100x: going 100 rounds without a hit happens about 37% of the time. That's not bad luck, that's the game.

So pick your target based on how many dead rounds you can stomach, then size your bet so the worst normal streak doesn't end your session. If you're chasing 100x, your bet should be tiny compared to your balance. If you're grinding 1.1x, remember that one loss costs you a lot of patience.

Hilo in 20 seconds

Hilo shows you a card. You guess whether the next one is higher or lower. Get it right and your multiplier grows. Keep going to stack it, or stop and take the money.

Full card rules and limits are on our Hilo game page.

Duel's rules are short and worth reading once:

  • Unlimited decks are in play, so every rank is equally likely on every card, no matter what came before.
  • Ace is the lowest card and King is the highest.
  • On middle cards the same rank also wins, with a lower payout. So the buttons read "Higher or Same" and "Lower or Same".
  • On a King or an Ace your choice is between Same and Lower or Higher.
  • The more cards you get right, the higher the payout. There's no maximum multiplier, only bet and profit limits.
  • A Skip Card button lets you pass on a card you don't want to play from.

The Hilo cheat sheet

Unlimited decks make the math clean. There are 13 ranks, so the fair multiplier is 13 divided by the number of ranks that win. Here is every middle card at 100% RTP, "Higher or Same" first, then "Lower or Same":

2: 92.31% at 1.08x, or 15.38% at 6.5x

3: 84.62% at 1.18x, or 23.08% at 4.33x

4: 76.92% at 1.3x, or 30.77% at 3.25x

5: 69.23% at 1.44x, or 38.46% at 2.6x

6: 61.54% at about 1.63x, or 46.15% at 2.17x

7: 53.85% at 1.86x either way

8: 46.15% at 2.17x, or 61.54% at about 1.63x

9: 38.46% at 2.6x, or 69.23% at 1.44x

10: 30.77% at 3.25x, or 76.92% at 1.3x

J: 23.08% at 4.33x, or 84.62% at 1.18x

Q: 15.38% at 6.5x, or 92.31% at 1.08x

On an Ace or a King, the big side wins 12 out of 13 times for about 1.08x, and Same hits 1 in 13 for 13x.

Notice the 7. It's the only card where both sides are almost a coin flip. Everything else has an obvious "likely" side and a "long shot" side.

How to actually play Hilo

Since every pick has the same expected value, Hilo strategy is about how you build the run, not about finding a magic card.

  1. Decide your stopping point before the first card. Write down a multiplier, like 1.5x or 3x, and take the money when you hit it.
  2. Pick the likely side if you want smooth sessions. Three straight picks at 84.62% land about 61% of the time and pay about 1.65x combined.
  3. Pick long shots if you want fewer, bigger hits. Three straight correct guesses on 7s land only about 16% of the time, but pay around 6.4x.
  4. Use Skip Card when a card doesn't fit your plan. If you're building with safe picks and a 7 shows up, that's a coin flip you didn't sign up for.

Every extra card is a new bet with your whole stack on the line. Going one more card because you feel hot is the most expensive habit in this game.

Limbo or Hilo: which fits you?

Same RTP, different personalities.

  • Want one decision per round and fast volume? Limbo, especially on Auto.
  • Want to steer a run and decide when to stop? Hilo.
  • Want lottery style hits? Limbo at high targets, with a tiny bet.
  • Want steady small wins with control? Hilo on the likely side with a fixed cash out goal.

Mistakes that cost real money

  • Martingale. Doubling after every loss at 2x feels safe until five or six losses in a row, which the math says you'll hit. Bet and profit limits stop the system long before your bankroll is big enough.
  • Believing in patterns. Limbo results don't remember the last round, and with unlimited decks Hilo cards don't either. Three low cards in a row tell you nothing about the fourth.
  • Changing targets mid tilt. Jumping from 2x to 50x to win back losses is just raising variance when you can least afford it.
  • Playing without a stop. At 100% RTP you're not set up to lose, but variance will still take you anywhere if you never walk away.

Why this only works at Duel

Run the same tables at a casino with a 1% edge and every multiplier gets shaved. Over thousands of Limbo rounds that adds up to a guaranteed slow bleed. At Duel the Originals are 100% RTP, and everyone gets instant 50% rakeback on top. That's why strategy here is about choosing risk, not fighting the house.
